Each year, the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office recognizes employees for their exceptional service, performance, and commitment to keeping our county safe. To nominate an employee for an award or recognition, please complete and submit the form below. The RCSO Awards Committee meets regularly to review nominations. Based on the award category, recipients may be recognized at the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office Employee Recognition Ceremony or throughout the year by division leaders.

Award Descriptions

Kenneth H. Johnson Medal of Honor

For those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The Medal of Honor is given, in memory and respect, to the deceased Deputy Sheriff's family.

Medal of Valor (Class A Commendation)

Awarded to a department member, who without regard for personal safety and in a conscientious and intelligent manner, performs an act which puts him or her in serious risk of imminent personal danger to life, above and beyond the call of duty.

Medal of Merit (Class B Commendation)

Awarded to a department member for a highly creditable, self-initiated law enforcement act or accomplishment.

Medal of Commendation (Class C Commendation)

Awarded to a department member for intelligent and excellent performance of law enforcement or related duties.

Distinguished Service Medal

Awarded to a department member who has demonstrated a consistent and superior performance in a variety of assigned duties within the Sheriff's office. Rather than a recognition of a response to a single incident, this award pays tribute to the Sheriff's office employee for continued efforts, accomplishments and leadership within the Sheriff's office.

Unit Citation

Awarded to a Unit whose teamwork displays a consistent and superior performance.

Commander of The Year - Any Division

In recognition of a Sheriff's office employee with the rank of commander who encompasses demonstrable, excellent skills related to day-to-day law enforcement-related assignments including, but not limited to, supervision or leadership, special assignments and has demonstrated excellence in leadership, community service, and/or mentoring, and enhances the agency through innovative thinking and problem solving, and performs demonstrable skills in planning and organization, communication and administration.

Lieutenant of The Year

In recognition of a Sheriff's office employee with the rank of lieutenant who encompasses demonstrable, excellent skills related to day-to-day law enforcement-related assignments including, but not limited to, supervision or leadership, special assignments and has demonstrated excellence in leadership, community service, and/or mentoring, and enhances the agency through innovative thinking and problem solving, and performs demonstrable skills in planning and organization, communication and administration.

Sergeant of The Year - Any Division

In recognition of a Sheriff's office employee with the rank of sergeant who encompasses demonstrable, excellent skills related to day-to-day law enforcement-related assignments, including, but not limited to, supervision or leadership, special assignments and has demonstrated excellence in leadership, community service, and/or mentoring, and day-to-day performance.

Investigator of The Year - Any Investigative Unit

In recognition of a Sheriff's office employee with the rank of deputy, assigned to an investigative unit, who encompasses demonstrable, excellent skills related to day-to-day investigative work, and has demonstrated excellence in leadership, community service, and/or mentoring, and day-to-day performance.

Deputy of The Year - Any Division

In recognition of a Sheriff's office employee with the rank of deputy who encompasses demonstrable, excellent skills related to day-to-day law enforcement-related assignments and has demonstrated excellence in leadership, community service, and/or mentoring, and day-to-day performance.

Correctional Officer of The Year

In recognition of a Sheriff's office employee with the rank of correctional officer who encompasses demonstrable, excellent skills related to day-to-day assignments and has demonstrated excellence in leadership, community service, and/or mentoring, and day-to-day performance.

Civilian of The Year - Any Division

In recognition of a Sheriff's office support staff employee who provides excellent day-to-day performance and who helps support and enhance the agency and community partnerships through problem solving, leadership and/or mentoring to others.

Volunteer of The Year - Any Division

In recognition of a Sheriff's office volunteer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to support the organization and community partnerships through their volunteer work, and encompasses demonstrable, excellent skills related to volunteer work and community engagement.

Nominations For Awards Below Are Reviewed And Given Throughout The Year

Life Saving Award

Awarded to a department member who has saved a life of a citizen through rescue, resuscitation and/or first aid. This award was created to recognize individuals who have saved another life.

Letter of Recognition

Awarded to a department member who, in the line of duty, handles an incident with an exceptional level of professionalism. This award will consist of a formal letter for the recipient's personnel file.

Sheriff's Award For Excellence

The Sheriff's Award for Excellence was established to recognize a citizen or public safety professional from another agency, who through their interaction with the Ramsey County Sheriff's office demonstrates an exceptional level of service to the community.
